Scarf it Up is a 501 (c)3 organization that began in 2009 when a group of friends got together to make scarves to give to the homeless. Hand- knitted, crocheted, or hand-sewn (even store-bought) scarves were donated. Each year we have been blessed with more kind souls, and, as we’ve grown, we’ve been able to share so much more than a scarf!
In 2013 we donated 275 backpacks (175 were donated to the Salvation Army in Fayetteville while another 100 were given to the Homeless Coalition of Moore County). The bags were filled with new fleece blankets, scarves, gloves, socks, hats, and toiletry kits. We conduct monthly 3rd Thursday shelter feedings, as well as annual events such as the Undie 500, Silent Auction, Cook Outs and other missions based on need.
Those of us who participate in the Scarf it Up project do not concern ourselves with why these folks have no place to call home. Whether they are homeless due to bad decisions, unexpected circumstances, mental health reasons, job loss, addictions or because they are veterans who have served our country....we help them all equally. We help them, simply, because it’s the right thing to do
Scarf it Up is a nonprofit organization consisting of both friends and strangers who come together, pooling our talents and resources, to make a difference in the lives of those who have less than us.
COOKOUTS for the homeless
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[a] you were doing it to me!’ Matthew 25:34-40 (NLT)
